I Put GUDWUDZ on the Table: Dan Serard’s Live Brand Teardown
Friends and followers, I did something on this episode most brand owners would never do. I put my own brand on the table and let a professional take it apart. On the record.
Dan Serard is the Chief Revenue Officer at Cannabis Creative Group. He has been with the agency since it started in 2018, back when it was called Champ Digital. He told me they have worked with more than 600 clients in about 36 states. I came in with a list of questions. What I got was a free consulting session, and you get to listen in.
Be the mayor
Before cannabis, Dan ran fitness clubs in downtown Boston and downtown Santa Monica. He wanted to be what he called “the mayor.” Know every member. Know every business owner. Not for the hard sell. So their guard would come down and he could actually teach them something.
He says that is how he got the cannabis job. This industry is still small, and what it needs most is people who build relationships before they ask for anything.
Marketing when the platforms are against you
I know this part too well. The second a product touches cannabis, or anything to do with smoking, the doors slam shut. The algorithms block you. Facebook will not recommend your page.
Dan laid out what his team has learned. Meta and Google do not allow the promotion of sales of cannabis or ancillary products. Put a price and a buy one, get one free in your ad, and you get flagged and shut down. Show smoke, and you get blocked. It can be done, he says. His team runs ads on both and drives real business. But it takes research, a fine line, and human creativity. Ask AI to write your cannabis ad copy, and in his words, “AI is not gonna know those nuances.”
The teardown
Then Dan pulled up the GUDWUDZ site while we talked. He liked the clean packaging. He liked the cutout that shows the product. He loved that it is sustainably sourced walnut, handcrafted. Then he got to work.
- Show it in people’s hands. Real use cases, out in the wild. In his words, “people buy what others use.”
- Lead with the value proposition at the very top of the page. Smoother smoke? No burnt fingers? Better taste? You have less than a second before someone scrolls past.
- Testimonials and explanation videos. Bold, image-first quick hits instead of long body copy.
Then he said the thing I needed to hear and did not want to.
I don’t necessarily see premium when I look at your website.
Dan Serard
Premium, to Dan, is a look you define and then hold. Blacks. Golds. Mattes. Textured finishes. He also asked me a fair question: if GUDWUDZ is not bamboo anymore, where does the bamboo in the story come in? My first version, Wamboo, was bamboo, and that is where some of the old branding came from. I wrote that one down.
If you build it, they will not come
I asked Dan about the deadliest belief in this industry. Build a great product and the people will line up. He called it “the kiss of death.” You might have a great friend network and a great product, he said, but you still have to educate people why.
His fix is to start local, prove it works, then grow. Boulder will not pay the bills, he said, but the whole state of Colorado might. Slower. Cheaper. And it builds community, which is how cannabis has always spread anyway. At a party, the smokers go out on the porch and meet their new best friends.
If you could only bet on two channels nobody can shut off, Dan says, pick these:
SEO is always gonna be king when it comes to searching products online.

The second is email. It takes time to build the list, through events, trade shows and handshakes. But once you have it, those are people who asked to hear from you.
Ninety days
My last question: if you were me, what are your three moves for the next 90 days? A brand positioning exercise to make premium real. Website updates with a strong call to action and the value proposition right on the home page. And events. Get the product into people’s hands and film it. It does not have to be professional.
I will tell you what I told Dan. Early on, I paid a branding company around five grand and had nothing to show for it. There are bad actors out there. This hour was the opposite.
And here is the hard truth for you. If you are building something, the product is not the brand. Your consistency is. I have watched organic cannabis farmer Farmer Tom Lauerman fight to keep control of his own name and likeness. That is what premium looks like when you stay with it.
